# How does Meses decide who a payment belongs to?

Meses (meses.ai) compares every deposit on the bank statement with what your customers owe according to your sheet, and proposes who and which period it belongs to. When the match is clear, it marks it as matched; when there is doubt, it shows it to you as a suggestion or leaves it for review so you decide.

## In short

- Each deposit ends up matched, suggested or needs review.
- Every proposal comes with plain-language evidence.
- Anything uncertain waits for your decision; nothing is forced.

## 1. What Meses takes into account

- Your bank statement for the month, with each deposit exactly as the bank prints it.
- Your collections records: who owes, how much and for which period.
- The payments already recorded in your sheet. If there is no information about a unit, Meses does not assume it went unpaid.
- All the month's deposits are reviewed together, so the same payment is never assigned twice.

## 2. The three statuses you will see

- **Matched:** Meses found a clear match and assigned it to the right customer and period.
- **Suggested:** Meses proposes a reasonable match, but you approve it.
- **Needs review:** the deposit cannot be assigned safely. It never disappears; it waits there until you resolve it.

## 3. Why Meses would rather ask you

- A misassigned payment costs more than a question. When in doubt, Meses shows you the case instead of guessing.
- Your decisions are labelled “Manually resolved” and kept apart from the original proposal.
- Resolving payments by hand does not change the automatic-match count, so the result reflects what Meses resolved on its own.

## 4. What you see when you open a payment

- A plain-language explanation of why the match is proposed.
- The exact sheet, row and cell each fact comes from, so you can check it yourself.
- The complete bank reference, uncut.

## 5. Privacy during analysis

Meses processes your statements securely: the PDF is not sent to an AI provider, and personal data is protected before any AI analysis. Your results always show the real names. The details are in [how Meses protects your bank statement](/en/help/bank-statements-and-privacy).

## 6. Working through a month

When a month finishes, the filters tell you how many deposits ended up in each status. Start with the suggested ones: open each, read the explanation, then approve or correct it. Then move to the ones that need review, which usually call for a phone call or a receipt.

To act on each status, see [how to read your results](/en/help/understanding-results).
