How to verify a SPEI payment with Banxico's CEP
To verify a SPEI transfer, download its CEP (Comprobante Electrónico de Pago, or electronic payment receipt) from Banxico's website. You enter the transfer date, the tracking key, the sending and receiving banks, the destination account and the exact amount. If Banxico's system returns a receipt and its details match your bank statement, the payment settled into your account.
What a CEP proves and what it leaves open
SPEI is the real-time transfer system that Banco de México (Banxico) operates for peso payments. Banxico also runs the CEP service, which issues a receipt for each settled transfer. The receipt shows:
- the date and time the transfer settled,
- the amount,
- the sending and receiving institutions,
- the payer (ordenante) and beneficiary names and accounts as the banks reported them,
- the tracking key (clave de rastreo) and the concept text.
What the CEP does not show is the commercial reason for the payment. It will not tell you which invoice, which month or which contract the money covers. It is also not a tax document. In Mexico, a CFDI (the electronic invoice registered with the tax authority, SAT) is a separate thing.
The five details you need before opening the CEP page
Collect these from the customer's own bank receipt or from your statement:
- Operation date. The day the transfer settled, not the day it was scheduled.
- Tracking key. The clave de rastreo, up to a few dozen letters and digits. Copy and paste it; never retype it.
- Sending bank. The customer's institution.
- Receiving bank. Yours.
- Destination account and amount. Your CLABE and the amount with centavos.
Some forms also let you search by numeric reference instead of tracking key. The tracking key is more reliable because the payer's bank generates it. The clave de rastreo guide explains where to find it.
Downloading the receipt from banxico.org.mx
- Open the CEP page on Banxico's website.
- Choose to search by tracking key.
- Enter the date, the key, and select both banks from the lists.
- Enter the beneficiary account (yours) and the amount.
- Complete the security check and submit.
- Download the receipt. Formats such as PDF and XML are offered; keep both if you can, because XML is easier to process later.
If the search returns nothing, change one field at a time. The most frequent fix is the date: a late-night transfer can settle the following day.
Checking the CEP line by line against your statement
Lay the receipt beside your bank statement and compare four points. An illustrative check:
| Field | On the CEP | On your statement | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amount | 25,000.00 | 25,000.00 | Match |
| Tracking key | Same string | Same string | Match |
| Destination account | Ends in 7731 | Your account, 7731 | Match |
| Payer | Comercial Ríos SA | Comercial Ríos SA | Match |
All four matching means the money is in your account. If the destination account differs, the customer paid someone else, perhaps an old account or another entity in your group. If the amount differs, look for a second transfer or a bank fee on their side.
When a customer sends a receipt that does not check out
Edited screenshots of banking apps are a known fraud pattern in Mexico. A CEP lookup is the fastest test. If the customer's details return no receipt after a careful retry, ask them for the tracking key exactly as their bank shows it, and ask their bank to confirm the transfer status. Do not release goods on the strength of a screenshot.
For a payment that arrived but cannot be tied to a customer, the reverse problem, see unidentified deposits in Mexico.
Filing CEPs so the next audit is short
Name each file with date, customer and amount, for example 2026-10-07_comercial-rios_25000.pdf, and save it in a folder per month. Link it from the customer's line in your receivables ledger. For shared-service centres, one folder per Mexican entity avoids mixing evidence between companies.
Where the CEP fits in a reconciliation with Meses
You need a CEP only for exceptions. Most deposits match without one. Meses (meses.ai) helps with the routine part: Meses is the AI platform for collections reconciliation in Latin America: it matches bank-statement deposits to what customers owe (dues, tuition, rent, instalments or invoices) and updates your records in minutes. AI proposes and people decide: nothing is written to your sheet until your team reviews and approves the changes. Keep CEPs for the cases your team flags during review.
Frequently asked questions
Is downloading a CEP free?
Yes. The lookup on Banxico's website costs nothing. Be wary of third-party sites that offer to generate a CEP for a fee.
Can a CEP be issued for a transfer that was returned?
The CEP reflects what the receiving institution reported for the transfer. If a payment was returned, you will not get a valid receipt showing it credited to your account, which is itself useful information.
Will my auditors accept a CEP as evidence?
It is generally strong evidence of a settled transfer because it comes from the central bank's system. Your audit firm decides what it accepts, so ask them how they want CEPs filed.
